About
Andrew Barker is a Boulder, Colorado-based watercolor artist whose intricate, graphic works draw deep inspiration from the flora, fauna, and rugged landscapes of the Rocky Mountains and the American West. Working primarily on fine art paper or wood—and frequently integrating ink, gouache, and colored pencil—his practice incorporates stylistic influences from mid-century commercial art, tattoo design, naturalist illustration, and early 20th-century Japanese printmaking. Combining traditional anatomical shading with sharp geometric forms, Barker’s art celebrates the shared struggles and joys of existence while tackling themes of conflict, death, and environmental urgency surrounding climate change and biodiversity loss. Underlying his work is an animistic reverence that treats every subject as a bearer of myth and cultural presence.
Born in Utah and raised across Oregon and East Africa, Barker has long maintained a personal and creative connection to the relationship between people and their environments. He earned his BFA in Applied Visual Arts from Oregon State University and spent two decades in the design industry before transitioning to a full-time studio practice in Boulder's NoBo Arts District. Today, his recognized works are held in private collections and displayed in galleries and museums throughout Colorado. His career includes accolades at fine art festivals and selections for prestigious exhibitions, such as the Colorado Governor's Art Show, the Cherry Creek Art Festival, and the Park City Kimball Art Festival.
