Edie Marie Ceramics

About

My work in ceramics is centered around a fascination with geometry in both two and three dimensions—a passion that transformed after loss. In the depths of my grief, stepping away from clay led me to the practice of drafting Islamic geometric designs, bringing new life and infinite possibilities to my artistic process. By screen printing these hand-drafted patterns directly onto complex, hand-built three-dimensional forms, I explore how a shape changes depending on pattern orientation, color, clay body, and firing atmosphere.

Working primarily with stoneware, I hand build each piece from slabs, drawing from regular three-dimensional shapes, custom-drafted functional forms, and the simple geometric magic of cylinders and circles. My surface decorations rely on a growing personal library of patterns sourced from sacred geometry, mathematics, and Islamic design, as well as the inspiring structures found throughout nature and architecture. Whether incorporating mandalas, zellige tiling, or golden ratio spirals, I create each piece with the hope that it will be held by both your hands and your eyes, awakening a sense of curiosity and awe for the patterns that envelop our lives.
