New & Featured Summer Artisan, Todd's Wood, Began With a Desire to Create the Ideal Brew Pad

Todd Loggins of Todd's Wood has many ideas, but sometimes the wood and the process take him in entirely new directions.

FF: Why and how did you begin your handmade journey?

TW: I started Todd's Wood when I came out of grad school profoundly unemployed. I was living with family for the summer and needed a way to keep my hands busy. As a home brewer, I set out to make my ideal brew paddle. However, I got hooked on laminating and shaping wood. I started making cutting boards for family and friends and after folks saw my work, I started getting requests. Now, being gainfully employed, woodworking is my way of relaxing at the end of the day. As someone who works with my brain all day, I consider the time that I get to work with my hands vital to my mental health. Plainly put, since woodworking keeps me going, I put a lot of work into my products.

FF: What lead you to your current line of goods?

TW: My current product line is cutting boards, paddles, and tables, all of which can be customized. My cutting board are my mainstay and something I put a lot of effort into. I don't only want to produce something that looks good, but that will last multiple generations.

FF: What inspires your work?

TW: My style of work is to sit in the shop, come up with a decent idea, cut some wood, then have a beer or scotch while I put it together. Sometimes my idea ends up working, and other times the idea takes a whole new form and I end up with some great patterns.

FF: Any advice for makers and biz entrepreneurs new to our creative community?

TW: My advice to makers is also my motto in life: Give a damn. I learned from my grandfather that coming from humble beginnings will never hold you back if you give a damn about what you do and about the people around you.

FF: Let us know if/where you sell your work other than online and at markets.

TW: I currently sell on Amazon handmade and through special orders.
