Behind the Scenes with Deborah Hager of Clay By Nature Pottery, New and Featured Fall Market Artisan

Creating unique designs with attention to the intricate detail of each piece, Clay By Nature Pottery's Deborah Hager combines the beautiful and the functional in objects that have an intimate place in people's lives - usable art through pottery.

FF: How did you begin your handmade journey?

CBN: I love to study art history and have a B.F.A.in Art and Ceramics. I was a full time potter at Van Briggle Art Pottery. Then in 1999 developed my own line of pottery and started Clay By Nature Pottery.

FF: What lead you to your current line of goods?

CBN: I went back to school to complete my B.F.A., and got introduced to sgraffito pottery and wood firing which lead me on a path to combine drawing and sgraffito designs.

FF: What materials do you work with & why?

CBN: Clay, it is a material you can do anything with and can be made into a useful object once fired. There is an endless array of techniques to explore when you are a ceramic artist.

FF: Inspiration comes from where?

CBN: I love the outdoors and scuba diving. I get my inspiration from animals and objects in nature. I love making functional art that people can use everyday. I enjoy drawing Fish, Luna Moths and Dragonflies on my pottery. I hope to inspire others to slow down and enjoy time spent with family and friends with an object that they appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship that went into it.

FF: What excites you for the future?

CBN: I am always excited to explore new designs in my pottery, I hope to incorporate cats into my work. I am excited to go scuba diving in the Florida Keys this fall.

FF: Any advice for makers and biz entrepreneurs new to our creative community?

CBN: Continue to improve your most popular items and be willing to risk new designs that may or may not be popular to continue to grow as a artist. Give your customers something fresh to look at. I always try to find venues where I can attract new customers.

FF: If you have a strong partnership with a non-profit org, what is it and what inspired you to do this?

CBN: I am a member of reef.org and Padi Scuba divers. I believe we all need to do our part and reduce global warming to help our oceans and our planet.
