Behind the Scenes with Purpose and Pine, Spring Market Featured Artisan

Repurposed wood and steel drives Colin Schroeder of Purpose and Pine to create modern rustic handcrafted furniture and accessories that inspire.

FF: How did you begin your handmade journey?

PP: I have been crafting and creating since I was a little tike and I have recently taken that enjoyment into a dream job. I have been working in the welding field for years and now use that welding experience to build furniture from recycled and re-purposed materials.

FF: What lead you to your current line of goods?

PP: I combine my woodworking skill with my metal working experience to create pieces that are both modern yet rustic.

FF: What materials do you work with & why?

PP: I use 100% reclaimed and recycled wood products and locally sourced re-purposed steel. I refuse to use any wood that is not reclaimed or recycled as preserving the environment was the primary catalyst to the starting of this business.

FF: Inspiration comes from where?

PP: I have been asked this before and I really don't have a 'source' of inspiration. I often let the wood speak to me, as cheesy as that sounds, and won't create something until I have schemed up a unique design that I have never seen before.

FF: What excites you for the future?

PP: The possibility of this business 5 years from now is very exciting. Thinking about the possibility of cranking out beetle kill tables for the masses is a very exciting idea.

FF: Any advice for makers and biz entrepreneurs new to our creative community?

PP: Hustle! I have only been doing this full time for 9 months and I still work 10-14 hour days everyday. I get to take off a random weekday to go mountain biking but every time I take a day off to appreciate nature I am reminded why I build recycled furniture and get back to the shop with a renewed sense of drive and passion.

FF: If you have a strong partnership with a non-profit org, what is it and what inspired you to do this?

PP: I donate 1% of all revenue to Conservation Colorado. They are an environmental protection agency and are close to home, unlike the big agencies that seem to be in it for political reasons.
