Behind the Scenes with Simple Body, New Firefly and Featured Artisan

Jewels Burdick, founder of Simple Body, uses natural and nourishing ingredients to create skin care products that work - so safe they're edible!

FF: How did you begin your handmade journey?

SB: Seven years ago, we had an alzheimer’s scare in my family. I read everything I could about alzheimer’s and dementia because they’re very prevalent in my family. What I found shocked me. While no conclusive studies have been done, there’s an undeniable link between chemicals and heavy metals that are used in body products and plaque on the brain. Further reading talked about how deodorants and antiperspirants contain chemicals that end up in our lymph nodes under our arms. Again, for me, there was no denying that there has to be some link between that and the increase in breast cancer, especially in younger generations than we’ve ever seen. After learning that there are no governmental agencies that oversee the production of cosmetics, but learning that 66% of what goes on your body, goes in your body; I knew I had to change my ways.

I went searching for a natural deodorant. I tried everything. EVERYTHING. I couldn’t find one that worked and had spent a lot of money on natural moisturizers and other natural products that didn’t work either. I decided to go to my kitchen and get to work! For a year and a half I worked on a deodorant recipe and finally stumbled on one that really works. The rest followed.

FF: What lead you to your current line of goods?

SB: I like a very simple routine in the morning. I’m always rushing to get out of the house. I wanted to develop products that could have multiple uses. For instance, I have 1 body wash. I use it on my face, hands and all over in the shower. There’s one healing stick for everything! Kids and adults alike love the stick for burns, cuts, eczema, psoriasis, and any type of dermatitis. I believe a simple beauty routine helps you stay consistent and that’s really important with skin care. Also, there’s a movement toward tiny homes or smaller homes and with the shrinking size of the bathrooms, most of us don’t have a place to store a ton of products, so why not keep it simple?

FF: What materials do you work with & why?

SB: I’ve spent a lot of time (a lot) sourcing my ingredients. My goal is to use edible ingredients in my products. Many people don’t realize that your skin “eats” everything you put on it, so I want to make products nourishing for your whole body as well as safe and gentle. Additionally, 95% of my line is Vegan Friendly. That’s really important to me because I really respect the lifestyle and it’s difficult to find natural products that are 100% Vegan. I’ve been a vegetarian since I was 13 and have an incredible love for animals (especially deer, is that weird?) Eventually, I suspect the entire line will be vegan.

FF: Inspiration comes from where?

SB: Everywhere! My customers, my friends, my family, reading, traveling, searching! I’ve been teaching DIY classes and it’s been so inspiring to listen to my students share their personal experiences. I feel like I’m constantly learning something new and wanting to incorporate it into my line!

FF: What excites you for the future?

SB: One of my goals for the future is to educate our next generation. I believe they can be the ones to inspire change in the cosmetic industry. I encourage them to vote with their dollars, to be smarter about their choices and to demand change.

FF: Any advice for makers and biz entrepreneurs new to our creative community?

SB: Just jump in! I feel like some people are hesitant to to pursue dreams and follow their passion. There’s nothing more emotionally rewarding and exciting than getting started! It’s terrifying, but I’ve always believed “build it and they will come!"
