Behind the Scenes with Eddy & Scout, Returning Featured Artisan

Put together a tall, lanky and comfort hungry child with an incredibly resourceful, creative and talented mom, and you have Eddy & Scout, inspired children's wear and more! Holly Willis, designer and entrepreneur, is also a mom with a mission.

FF: How did you begin your handmade journey?

ES: They say that necessity is the mother of invention, and having to dress an especially picky and lanky toddler and little boy was a challenge, as everything was always too short in the legs/arms/torso, but swimming in width on my kiddo. He also craved "soft", so one day I made him a hoodie sweatshirt that was longer in the body and arms, and SOFT. He wore it for three months straight. We had to wash it while he slept. Soon other people were asking me to make one for them. Before too long we branched into other soft clothes like our pants and leggings that have a variable inseam for growing kids, and skirts with soft waistbands and pockets and easy-to-pull-on dresses and tops. We listened to what our customers were asking for, and kept creating to clothe kids in fun and soft (machine washable!) garments that they LOVE!

FF: What lead you to your current line of goods?

ES: The Spring Line has been a fun one, as we have done a lot of mixing and matching of fabrics to make some colorful dresses and skirts and outfits. Sometimes just trying new things leads to great and fresh new design!

FF: What materials do you work with & why?

ES: We utilize mostly soft cotton knits, sourced from the United States whenever available, and also garment dye a number of our pieces with eco-conscious reactive dyes. We like the natural and soft feel of Cotton, and we think that kids deserve to wear something that feels like a hug, and parents deserve to not have to do anything more than throw their kids' clothes into the washer and dryer after a day of adventure! (Cuz who has time to handwash or iron kid clothing??)

FF: Inspiration comes from where?

ES: Almost all inspiration in the design process comes from our time outdoors. The play of fun colors, prints that depict trees, flowers, twigs, and birds tend to be our favorites. We create clothing that not only looks nice, but is designed to romp through the woods while still garnering "prince" or "princess" points for style. Since Eddy & Scout is made for whatever adventure life gives you, why not reflect the beauty of our favorite natural adventures in our pieces?

FF: What excites you for the future?

ES: Because E & S sizing is doubled and we use high quality materials, each piece is designed to last 2 years and to span seasons. Living in an age where people see clothing, especially children's clothing, as disposable, we are excited to turn people on to a new and more sustainable approach to clothing their kids! Many of our pieces will coordinate from season to season and create a sort of "capsule" wardrobe that has become the popular minimalist approach in womenswear. We are excited for the potentially positive impact that this has on our environment and about bringing awareness and change to the ills of utilizing the cheap labor that "disposable" clothing perpetuates.
