Sunray Natural, New and Featured Holiday Artisan, Creates Organic Herb/Spice Blends and Handcrafted
Sunray Natural's Josh Hillhouse and family started a small family garden on a neighbor's side yard. It quickly grew into a "Foodie Homestead" - 8 acres of natural food production and a large offering of organically grown herb/spice blends and handcrafted teas.
FF: Why did you begin your handmade journey?
SN: Our journey began as a small garden in the back yard of our next door neighbor's house. We didn't have a yard but still wanted to grow some organic foods. Our journey has blossomed into an 8 acre sustainable homestead where we raise chickens, ducks and quail for eggs, have several acres of herb and veggie gardens, a few cows for grass fed meat and a dedicated kitchen for producing our incredible product line.
FF: How did you begin your handmade journey?
SN: Our product line came about as we realized the lack of fresh, organically grown
herb/spice and tea blends in the stores and at our local farmers markets. We set
out to develop the tastiest and healthiest product available today. We now have
over 60 blends all hand crafted from the freshest and healthiest ingredients
FF: What lead you to your current line of goods?
SN: At first we sold fresh herbs, greens and veggies at the farmers markets. Early and late season were always tough for us due to our veggies taking so long to become ripe and ready. We however always had fresh herbs and greens available and, as we sold our gourmet salad greens, we decided to also make and sell a few herb and spice blends which could be used as salad dressings to go with our fresh salad mixes. The first two blends, an Italian and a Ranch blend, were very well received by our customers and we began making more flavors. It wasn't long before we realized we could also create some loose leaf herbal tea blends to fill our farmers market tables. Today we can fill over 20 feet of table space with all our offerings.
FF: What materials do you work with & why?
SN: We only use fair trade, organically grown ingredients in all our products. Many of which are grown by local farms, including our own. We feel very strongly that all food should be free of poisons, corporate ownership and be able to nourish the body, mind and spirit as nature intends.
FF: What inspires your work?
SN: Healthy, delicious, and handmade food inspires us. We spend a ton of time in the kitchen and strive to make every meal from scratch. Our product line makes
that challenge easier and tastier on a daily basis.
FF: What excites you for the future?
SN: It seem more and more people are waking up to the need for organically grown foods and drinks. We are excited to continue providing amazing, healthy foods for our local community and our product line to anyone who wants it.
FF: Anything else you'd like to share with us?
SN: We created our business from a love of growing things. We didn't force our land to grow particular items but rather let it tell us what it wanted to grow. Perennial herbs and greens love to grow on our property. Chickens and ducks love to eat the weeds and all of our extra goodies, while the cows love the acres of grass and alfalfa we have out back. The animals feed the land and us while we help feed the animals
and our community. Instead of competing with the other veggie growers at our
farmers markets we are instead a perfect pairing for them!
