Fall Market Featured Artisan, Sweet Bird Studio, Breathes New Life & Love into Old Finds
Nancy Anderson of Sweet Bird Studio is back with her fabulously unique "wearable shrines of intention for the body, soul and faithful companion"...so how did this creative force come to be?
FF: How did you begin your handmade journey?
SBS: In 1988, I began with a 2"X2" square of sheet silver and made one piece. Mainly, self taught, I fell in love with the medium from that moment on. At the time, I would take a few pieces to a gallery, they would purchase and I would order more silver, a tiny bit at a time as it was all I could afford.
FF: What led you to your current line of goods?
SBS: I am fascinated by the scarcity of materials people used to make incredible art while going over the Santa Fe trail. Namely, tin that they used from cans of food.
Sweet Bird Studio made jewelry worn by Tom Cruise & Alec Baldwin in movie, "Rock of Ages".
FF: What materials do you work with & why?
SBS: I work with anything old, repurposed and had a former life, along with trade beads and silver. I work with these particular materials because they breathe such "soul" into a piece. Plus, there is far too much "new stuff" being mass produced and degrading our environment.
FF: Inspiration comes from where?
SBS: My inspiration comes from Americana folk art, Spanish Colonial art and the written word.
FF: What excites you for the future?
SBS: My new store and workshop soon to open in Niwot, Colorado. It will be a place for workshops and classes, retail and production studio as well as a place to purchase and make unique charms for your own jewelry making. What excites me is to excite others to create!
FF: Any advice for makers and biz entrepreneurs new to our creative community?
SBS: Just show up, keep experimenting with your own unique style and know that something will eventually come if you stick with it. Rome wasn't built in a day!
FF: If you have a strong partnership with a non-profit org, what is it and what inspired you to do this?
SBS: Yes, There with Care. I began making remembrance pendants for families who have lost a loved one, especially a child. They are the most heartfelt and important pieces I make. To know you have made someone's life slightly happier by giving a talisman they can wear when words can't help. That is the healing power of art, which always reminds me to make with purpose and intention.
FF: Anything else you'd like to tell us?
SBS: I am dedicated to making bling for animals, as they are a very special part of our lives and families.
When I see a person relate to my work, whether in tears or laughter, I know I have done my job.
