Behind the Scenes with Jenna Vogel of Upward Collective, Spring Market Featured Artisan

Upward Collective is an inspiring new artisan to Firefly Handmade. Coming from Fort Collins, entrepreneur Jenna Vogel is a creative force!

FF: How did you begin your handmade journey?

UC: Thrifting, mending and hoarding vintage bargains with my great grandma - some of my earliest (and best) memories! I'm a 23 year old, fourth generation entrepreneur with a die hard passion for sewing and bargain shopping - it just kind of happened.

FF: What lead you to your current line of goods?

UC: Lots of experimentation. We're forever trying to merge handmade + affordable + on trend while still maintaining quick turnaround times! A good chunk of our summer lineup is made up of hand sewn garments. Cut from scratch and a pattern I drew, I'm beyond excited for the brand to continue in this direction!

FF: What materials do you work with & why?

UC: Thrifted EVERYTHING if at all possible - from flannel to furniture & accessories or vintage textiles and fabrics we strive to compose Upward of primarily used materials whenever possible. It's good for the environment, gives life to things that would otherwise sit in a landfill and allows us to keep costs reasonable for customers! Win / Win! I've also become obsessed with using every scrap of fabric or yarn in the studio. Chopping them into tiny pieces to blend with fiberfill and stuff our Saguaro Pillows has become a staple step in our production process!

FF: What excites you for the future?

UC: TRAVEL! We love a good in person shopping experience or pop up market and honestly can't get enough! Getting to bring Upward on the road and share our products with new people in new places will NEVER get old and I can't wait to see where we go and who we meet!

FF: Any advice for makers and biz entrepreneurs new to our creative community?

UC: Always have a "fun" project running alongside whatever is happening in your creative career. Designing, producing, and creating to pay bills sheds a whole new light on being a "maker". It's easy to get sucked in and lose inspiration but I have found that starting new projects for yourself or just because is rewarding on a lot of levels.
