Behind the Scenes with The Sophisticate's Tea, Spring Market Featured Artisan
Simplicity, creativity, an adventurous spirit, and community: these are the hallmarks of sophistication and foundational elements of The Sophisticate’s Tea.
FF: How did you begin your handmade journey?
TST: The Sophisticate's Tea grew from an earthy and familiar tale. Our founder, Trinity Hindman, was a young wife to a grad student and mother struggling to pay bills, with no money for presents during the holidays. From a love of tea, she created a delicious chai to spread Christmas cheer to friends and family. Requests for her chai began pouring in. During the next seven years, she refined that recipe and expanded her vision for a tea company. Necessity was the mother of invention, and our company’s story became a classic American tale of ingenuity, initiative, creativity, and grit.
FF: What lead you to your current line of goods?
TST: The Sophisticate's Tea specializes in producing unique, high quality, microbrewed tea concentrates for tea lattes and tea cocktails. All of our teas should be mixed with dairy or your favorite dairy substitute in equal parts. We realized that we could do for craft tea what microbreweries have done for craft beer. Our product line will soon include six standard brews as well as special seasonal offerings. And we hope to branch into loose-leaf tea and ready-to-drink teas in the near future.
FF: Inspiration comes from where?
TST: We love tea for its beautiful balance of simple ingredients, complex flavors, global heritage, and communal nature. We value the virtue of sophistication, a wise appreciation of an object's good qualities, and we want others to pursue this virtue with us. We believe that simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication.
FF: What excites you for the future?
TST: We don't need to read tealeaves to get the tea market fortune. All we have to do is look at market trends to know that the pot is whistling and teacups in the US are ready to overflow. By following the trend of the craft wine artisans of the 1970s, the craft coffee makers in the ‘80s and ‘90s, and the craft beer producers in the 2000s, The Sophisticate's Tea is ready to meet these consumer demands through wholesale distribution partners and future retail locations.
FF: Any advice for makers and biz entrepreneurs new to our creative community?
TST: Take classes with your local Small Business Development Center (a partner with the SBA). The classes are relatively cheap, flexible, and extremely helpful for starting your business. The network and knowledge you gain is worth far more than you will pay.
FF: Anything else you'd like to tell us?
TST: We're looking to grow! If you own or know of a business that would be interested in our tea products, we'd love to partner with more wholesale customers. Please contact Jeremiah@TheSophisticatesTea.com for wholesale information and visit thesophisticatestea.com for retail purchases. We deliver for free to the Denver Metro area.
