Behind the Scenes with Hued

Inspired by Native American culture and pops of color, Hued's creator and designer, Lindsey Lansford, brings us unique, light weight jewelry that makes a bold statement every time.

FF: How did you begin your handmade journey?

H: I started becoming interested in making jewelry when I worked for a small fashion designer in Brooklyn one summer doing college. I came across a bead shop and could spend hours in that place. However, when I graduated two years later I didn't know how to make my dream for being self-employed a reality. I moved out to Colorado and became in love with the beauty that surrounded me, so any job at that time would be fine, as long as it paid the bills. So for 4 years I became a slave of the service industry, and after long nights on my feet I gathered enough motivation to start my true journey. I read lots of books that had to do with starting my own small business, and watched youtube videos on varies beading techniques. There have been several ups and downs along the way, but I wouldn't change anything about it. You live, you learn, and I've never been happier!

FF: What materials do you work with & why?

H: I create my earrings and some parts of necklaces with seed beads, nylon, and fireline because these materials are lightweight, yet strong. I also use recycled leather and ultra suede to close off the bracelets and for the backings of my earrings to prevent the earring from folding.I also use sterling silver findings, nickel free chain, and non toxic glue to avoid certain allergies.

FF: Inspiration comes from where?

H: Most of my inspiration comes from the Native American culture, more specific: their clothing- pendleton blacknets/weavings/headdresses/beadwork/silver and turquoise. Nature and and the mountains have also been a huge inspiration.Living in Colorado you experience the colors and textures of all 4 seasons, and that really inspires me as i shoot photography and collect design inspiration.

FF: What excites you for the future?

H: No one can predict the future, but in order for me to keep creating new good in the future, means I get to travel and experience new challenges that fuel my creative process. It excites and motivates me to know I can do what I love and make a living, while learning and growing about this huge, natural world most people tend to take for granted.
